Store Credit Cards

Store Credit Cards - where do you shop?

Store credit cards are a type of credit card that show affinity to a particular shop, or group of shops. For example John Lewis offers store cards from 14% APR introductory rate and free home delivery, access to special events including wine tasting and shopping evenings. Debenhams offer store credit cards giving you access to sale preview evenings and personal invitations to special events. Marks and Spencer's store cards offer points for £s spent on the store card, no annual fee and flexible repayment options. There are loads of other stores that offer store credit cards (B&Q, Argos, House of Fraser, Next). Other offers that you might find a particular store card gives you are discounts off your first purchase, reward points or free copies of the in-store magazine.

The disadvantage of the average store credit card is the high interest rate that you have to pay on balances that you leave on the card. Rates can often be around 30% APR, which is high. If you have outstanding balances on your store cards why not look at other pages on this site and transfer those balances to a 0% credit card, or look at www.help-debtconsolidation.co.uk for loan enquiries.

Did you know that GE Consumer Finance is the biggest store credit credit cards provider with 10 million customers? GE is owned by GE Capital and is behind store cards at House of Fraser and Arcadia, the retailer that owns High Street brands such as TopShop, Burton and Dorothy Perkins. (Andrew Verity, BBC personal finance reporter july 2003)
